A case of match-itis

Our new sectional was delivered last week. It looked really good, but it was immediately apparent that our coffee table and rug clashed. The rug was the wrong color and the coffee table was a completely different style. Oh, and the throw pillows had to go too.

So I hit up IKEA in search of a rug. I found a nice one, and then began eyeing the coffee tables. This is a pretty typical decorating experience — change one thing, and suddenly everything else “needs” to be changed as well.

In our case, I knew in advance that the coffee table would no longer match, so that was no surprise. But replacing it is still not a need. It’s just something that would make the room look nicer. I had enough money to buy an IKEA coffee table but couldn’t find a table that I was 100% happy with. So instead of spending the money on a less-than-ideal temporary fix, we’ll wait until we find something that’s what we really want.

But the non-matching table really bugs me, so I’m tempted to sell it and have nothing there instead. That’s certainly a cheaper option than going out and buying something that I only sort-of like, and then spending still more money to replace it again later.

Uh oh :) I get that too. I remember when I had an apartment and I had to upgrade to get a new table or something, the chairs had to match, and then the rug looked weird.. by the time I was done, I spent a small fortune matching a $50 table

    LOL

I know you don’t have young kids like I do, but when our oldest started to crawl, the first thing we did was get rid of the coffee table. And you know what? We haven’t missed it, and we’ve talked about never replacing it even when the kids are much older. So if it’s bugging you, I think you should get rid of it and maybe you’ll be satisfied :)

It didn’t even occur to me until recently (like yesterday) that furniture could match. Darling’s job with the furniture outlet has brought this fact into my consciousness, and I’m not very happy with it… We’ve only bought two pieces of furniture: a bookcase given away a few months later, and a futon for our guest room. Eclecticism is a theme, right?

Sure it is, Tread. In fact our computer room is decked out in that theme right now, and probably will be for several more years.

Another idea is to paint your table some color that will go with your new sectional.
