I actually deliberately fool myself with this self-knowledge. I transfer money from my checking account to my savings account to keep a consistently low balance of spending money, and that way, I have a number in the back of my head that is much, much lower than the one that I can actually work with. I do the same thing with stuff I've bought in bulk--TP, shampoo, soap. I fill a smaller container, and put away the rest (in a cabinet or closet).
