Airfare tools

It’s getting to be vacation season, so I thought I’d share a couple of the airfare tools that I like to use.

My absolute favorite is Airfare Watchdog. My aunt sent me the link to them, and it’s been fabulous for keeping an eye on prices, getting a feel for what a good deal is to various locations, and then being notified of the deals you’re looking for.

You can use the site in two ways — either by manually going to the site and looking for the deals of the day, or by signing up for their email list. I’m on their email list, which I like because you can specify where you’ll be flying from and where you’d like to fly to, and they’ll send you deals related directly to what you’ve specified (in addition to the regular deals).

Once you find a fare you’re interested in, they’ll offer suggestions on where to search. Some of them are pretty limited, so it’s good to act very quickly if a great deal appears.

(I know that sounded like an ad for them, but they don’t even know I’m writing this. I just like them that much. The only downside I’ve found to them is that their emails make me want to fly somewhere All. The. Time.)

The other site I like is called Farecast, which I guess was recently(?) bought out by Microsoft, so we’ll see where that goes. But the idea behind Farecast is to help you decide when to buy tickets. I don’t know about you, but I always feel like the minute I buy a ticket, a better deal will come along. Farecast makes a suggestion as to whether the fares are likely to go up, go down, or hold steady. So you’ll probably at least feel a little better about buying when you do.
