Car repair update

For those of you wanting an update on my car repairs, here you go.

As a reminder, its symptoms were:

  • Lurching sometimes while driving at freeway speeds
  • Acting like it wasn’t getting enough gas
  • The check engine light coming on
  • And my AC having been out for years

After getting my car fixed, I’m embarrassed to say just how many years my AC was out of order.

*cough*five years*cough*

Anyway. Approximately $500 later (including parts and labor) I have a non-sputtering, happy little car with very cold AC!

Just in time for summer!

I’m so happy about it that I keep randomly turning on the AC even when I don’t need it.

The problem with the sputtering appears to have been an air flow sensor. It hasn’t sputtered since, so hopefully that really did do the trick.

The problem with the AC appears to (possibly) have been a slow leak. For now, a little more refrigerant did the trick. I’ll let you know in the fall if that was all it was or not. I feel a little silly that I waited so long to get it looked at, but in retrospect for several of those years I was unemployed and living on a ridiculously low amount of money, so you can see why AC might not have been a priority. After that I was just procrastinating.

But it’s all good now.

How about the “check engine” light?

The code for the check engine light indicated the air flow sensor.

My check engine light keeps coming in an need to take the car in but haven’t yet. Any advice on what to ask so I don’t get taken advantage of?

Craig, the best thing would be to find a mechanic you can trust. Do you know anyone with a similar make of car? Try asking them where they go, etc. But when the check engine light comes on, a code us stored in your car’s computer, so you should be able to ask what the code indicates.

I know I procrastinate doing things that in the end take no more than a couple dollars and a little time. Even jobs that I think will be large and take lots of time I procrastinate on because of how much I think it will take but in the end its not nearly that bad.
