Consumer Credit Counseling

Many times people looking to get out of debt turn to the idea of credit counseling or debt reduction companies. It’s very important that IF you do this, that you use a reputable company. Unfortunately, there are many, many companies that are out there that are NOT reputable. Generally, it’s a good idea to explore your other options and to attempt to get your debt under control on your own, especially if you’re not at the point of being called by collectors.

All that said, I want to share my own experience with a credit counseling company. As you might have guessed from the title of this post, I used Consumer Credit Counseling, specifically the CCCS Southwest branch, although at the time they were not a part of Money Management International. (My husband also used Consumer Credit Counseling, but he used CCCS of Orange County.)

I used them back when my ex-husband and I were married. As I remember, it was a fairly simple process. We went in, presented our debts, income and list of creditors, and they contacted everyone and set up payment plans. They got our interest reduced on our credit cards, and most importantly, required that we cut up our credit cards. All of them. THAT was probably the best thing they did for us. However, my experience with them is rather limited, because before we could finish the program we divorced. Maybe I will ask my husband to detail his experience, because I know that there were some things that CCCS did for him that they didn’t do for me. I can say though that they did in fact pay our creditors what they said they would pay them, and it did not show up as a negative on my credit report.

  • Is the credit counseling you are referring to different than debt consolidation? Debt consolidation is one of the worst things you can do to your credit- since it shows up and looks almost as bad as a bankruptcy (ex-husband).

  • What both my husband and I did was NOT debt consolidation. It was literally credit counseling, and they spoke with the creditors as well to get interest rate reductions. I should have made that point clearer. Thanks for asking.
