Do you find it hard to buy things for yourself?

I sometimes find it hard to spend money on myself. I can buy things for the house, and I can buy presents for others with no problem, but buying things for just me can be a different story. Sometimes it’s because there’s nothing out there that I really want, but other times I wonder if it’s something that’s ingrained in women or social pressure. In other words, I wonder if not buying things for yourself is another way of putting others first. (Which isn’t to say that I haven’t bought things that were just for me; I have, and I’m getting better at it. In fact I might go practice some more soon…)

But I noticed that when I was in debt, I actually made things worse by not buying things for myself. Because I’d want to buy something for myself, but I’d feel guilty about it because we were in debt, and so instead I’d buy something for my son or husband that they “needed”. That way I could get my buying fix in without feeling badly about it. I’d have been better off either not shopping at all, or buying something very small for myself (like a candy bar) instead of clothes for my son.

Yes, I too feel guilty when shopping for myself. Even when I have a hair appointment or some other necessity, I freak out.

I hope this eventually goes away, with debt removal.

Yes, I have felt like that my entire life. Other people always come first.
