Don’t go halfway
The other day I carried a book from the computer room into our bedroom. My plan was to put it next to the bed so I could continue reading it later on. Instead, I set it on the dresser as I walked in.
Halfway to where I actually wanted it to be.
I started to leave the room, and thought, “Oh come on, carry it the rest of the way. You were almost there, why stop now?”
So I took it the rest of the way. But if I hadn’t, I’d likely have gotten into bed later that night and then realized that the book was on the dresser. I probably would have just waited to read it another day.
It’s easy to set out with certain intentions and stop halfway to completing them. (Or sometimes even closer to the goal.)
It can even get to be a habit.
Maybe we decide to organize our finances and so we get everything out. We work on it for awhile, and then just stop. Maybe it’s time for lunch, and when we return the pile seems overwhelming or something else catches our eye.
But I’ve found that if you can get past that one little point of inertia, you’ve accomplished the hardest part. It’s usually all downhill from there. Don’t go halfway.
