Dressing up for less
My high school reunion was this year. Since the invitation said semi-formal, a shopping trip was clearly in order. (My wardrobe pretty much consists of jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and a couple of very formal dresses.)
But…I had two problems. One was that hitting every store in the mall left me frustrated. There wasn’t much to choose from in the first place, and the few things I tried on didn’t fit. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because after I got home from shopping I discovered problem #2: I’d forgotten to account for a nearly-$500 bill. After paying that I had a grand total of $67 left until the 15th. And I needed to buy gas.
Some friends sent me a few catalog links, thinking maybe I could order in time, but that was no longer an option for me. (It did give me a good idea of exactly what “semi-formal” meant though, which was helpful because I’d had no clue.)
I decided to try some resale and thrift shops instead. 40 minutes later (including drive time) I was the proud owner of a $9 dress. A really cute $9 dress that got me “Great dress!” compliments. I think I’m going to start hitting up thrift stores FIRST next time I feel like clothes shopping, because they had so much nice stuff. Some of it still had the original ($200+ Neiman Marcus) price tags on.
