Emergency kit expenses to date

Since we started outfitting our emergency kit last month, we’ve gotten the following items together:

3 smoke alarms (we only had one previously) – $21.50 at Costco
Just over 9 gallons of water in individual bottles – $10.99 at Costco
Potassium Iodide pills (we do live near a reactor) – $44.91 ($9.99 per pack + tax) from nukepills.com
Tylenol – $4.72 for a 125 count bottle, using a $5 off coupon.
Large plastic bin to hold these items – $14.04 at IKEA
Large water bowl for pets – 85 cents at IKEA
Towels (4 bath, 3 hand) – $8.03 at IKEA
Manual can opener – $0, a gift from nearly 20 years ago
An old pair of glasses – no idea on the amount since they’re very old

Total out of pocket cost so far? $105.04

Our next step will be to gather up all the things we already happen to have on hand and place them into the container. Then we’ll prioritize next month’s list.

I’m a big believer in having emergency supplies. I plan supplies based on whether I can stay home or have to evacuate. Evacuation supplies are organized by how much notice there is and how long the evacuation might last. I strongly recommend you also have on hand at least several hundred dollars in small bills.

Yes, we’re doing the same thing, although I can’t really think of anything that we’d need to evacuate for other than a house fire. (And in that case, I’m not sure we’d even have the time to grab the evacuation bin.)

Great article. You have given me a small kick in the butt and I might actually start preparing my own kit now.

Incidentally, you really can’t think of what would make you evacuate your house for an extended period? Didn’t you just say you live by a nuclear reactor?

Shadox, yes, with literally millions of people living in the area, I think we’d probably be better off sheltering in our home instead of being out on the roads (completely unprotected) in case of a nuclear accident.
