Excuse Me, Your Job is Waiting

I was the lucky winner of the Excuse Me, Your Job is Waiting giveaway on Blogging Away Debt. (Check out Tricia’s review as well.) Like Tricia, I’ll be passing along the copy to a random commenter. If you’d like a chance at receiving the book, just leave a comment on this post by May 29th, 2007. (U.S. & Canadian participants only, unless you want to pay for shipping.) I’ll attempt to contact the winner on May 30th, 2007, and will need to hear back from them no later than June 7th, 2007 or I will choose a new random commenter to win. Now, on to the review:

There’s no question about it, Excuse Me, Your Job is Waiting (affiliate link) is all about energy and the Law of Attraction. I have to admit that I wasn’t very thrilled with the 10 pages or so early on that were all about “wants”. Something about those particular pages just rubbed me the wrong way, which is odd because I do believe in and regularly practice the Law of Attraction. However, once I got over those few pages I realized that the book has quite a bit of useful information in it that I hadn’t read elsewhere. Of course it was also chock-full of suggestions on how to send out positive energy and visualize yourself in the job of your dreams.

The book is just under 300 pages, and includes 24 chapters plus an appendix & index. The chapters are broken into 3 major sections: Energy, Economics, and Equilibrium. They walk you through the entire job-hunting process, ranging from understanding how your real desires affect the process, to what to wear when going on an interview, to economics and how it affects the world around us. They also include stories and ancedotes (such as the person who arrived at an interview wearing a prom dress) which help to personalize the concepts being explained.

My favorite hands-on tips involved interviewing, cover letters and followup letters. The examples given for those were outstanding and extremely helpful. It was great to see something like that written by a human resources professional. I also particularly liked the point-system suggestion at the very end of the book.

There was also a section on self-employment, which I could identify with very throughly. It was nice to see something like that included in a book of this sort, because it recognizes that not everyone’s dream of attracting the work they want involves working for someone else. I found it helpful to see it spelled out that the same methods used to attract a job could be used to attract customers and grow your business.

I’m 62, and understand the “laws of attraction”, remember them so well in early job hunting. But, now I feel so removed even though I have two strong Masters in teaching. How do I regain former enthusiasm? Enjoyed the page, and yes, you may put my name in the pot. Thanks!
