Free compact fluorescent light bulbs

I’ve written before about how using CFLs can save money & energy, but I just saw that Home Depot is doing a promotion this coming Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd). They’re giving away a total of one million compact fluorescent light bulbs across the continental United States on that day.

If you haven’t yet given CFLs a try, this is a great risk-free way to try them out. (And if for some reason you decide they’re not for you, please give them to a friend or neighbor who might be interested.) I won’t be stopping in for a free light bulb myself, because we already have enough for our house thanks to the last Lowe’s rebate, but I can’t encourage you enough to give CFLs a try.

Older complaints about the light being too harsh have been resolved — we haven’t noticed that at all. And they’re especially wonderful if you live in a warm climate, because they don’t put out the heat the way other bulbs do. When I first did the change over to CFLs, I’d thought that I would wait until the old bulbs burned out. Then I decided that it was actually less wasteful for me to take out the old bulbs NOW and replace them with the compact fluorescents, so I did a pack a month until they were replaced.

Do they have bulbs with the smaller thread size (for bathroom lamps or lamps out front etc)? Last time I checked, they only had the larger ones.

I’m not sure about the thread size in particular, but I know they have bulbs with smaller bases. We have them in our bathrooms, and very small ones in the chandelier in our kitchen.

I think that’s an excellent effort. Australia is on the right path, outlawing regular lightbulbs. They’ve been giving away free CFLs on Earth Day for the last couple of years at my office.
