Had to put the emergency fund to use
We had to put the emergency fund to use this past weekend. We have two cats, and we’d noticed that their food wasn’t disappearing as fast as usual. Still, both cats appeared fine. But then we noticed that one of them started hiding and seemed to be acting poorly this weekend, which are bad signs. So we took her to the vet and got some bad news: she has liver failure.
While that is a depressing thing, there is a small bright side: At least we didn’t have to worry about money while we were standing there in the vets office debating the treatment options (which ranged from $400-$1000.) Instead, we were able to talk about what we thought might be best for our cat.
We chose to treat her at home, which I hope was the right decision. I just couldn’t leave her there though, and there did not seem to be a large difference between what would actually be done either way. (The main difference was who would be doing it.) I hope that she pulls through.

So sorry to hear about your cat. I hope she recovers and is back chasing mice in no time!

My friend’s cat had a similar experience but he was very old (18 years) so I don’t think the cases are similar enough to draw any comparisons. I wish I had some hope to give out, but I wish you and your baby all the best.

Aw, sorry to hear about your cat, hopefully the recovering goes well.
But what a sense of accomplishment that must have been to know you had the money to tend to your cat. :) These kind of stories inspire me to keep plugging away… because in a time of despair i’ll be able to support myself!

My cat was in complete liver failure at 3 years of age and dropped to 6 pounds (from 14). The vet told me to prepare myself, but I still did my best to get him to eat, (so that his body could fight whatever was making him ill) I bought the most savoury food I could find (1/4 tin of Fancy Feast was all he could eat for a while) and Pedialyte administered with a syringe. He turned around eventually, and is now a healthy 14 year old cat! Good luck with yours, hopefully she’ll pull through as well.
Love your blog, I’ve learned alot!

Thanks everyone for your good wishes. (And your story, Roberta. I’m going to get some Pedialyte too.)

I have a cat, so I can imagine how you felt. I hope your kitty recovers. I’m also glad that you have the financial means to treat her. That’s one less thing to stress over.
