Hard times give people new insights

While I wouldn’t wish hard times on anyone, there is an upside to them: they give people new insights, a chance to look at the world differently, and to experience things that could turn out to be positive in the long run.

What do I mean?

If I hadn’t gotten a divorce, I’d have never discovered my own inner strength. I’d have missed out on the ability to stand up for myself and to be my own person.

If I hadn’t had constant car troubles and my then-husband hadn’t totaled his car, I’d have probably never tried riding the bus, which it turned out that I thoroughly enjoyed. (I heard something on the radio that got me thinking on this: the story said that even though gas prices were down, public transportation ridership was still way up. People probably discovered how relaxing using public transportation is compared to inching along in bumper to bumper traffic.)

If I hadn’t seen certain job-loss staring me in the face years ago, I’d have probably never gotten on the track to saving up an emergency fund.

If my mom hadn’t died young, I probably wouldn’t have the same appreciation that “now is all there is”; that I should tell people how I feel, appreciate what I have, and do the things I want to do.

And maybe “hard times” are just part of life. Everyone goes through hard times. Experiences and definitions of hard times will vary from person to person, but how we choose to look at them and learn from them can make all the difference.

So in these hard economic times, try to look for the upsides. Because they ARE there.

  • All very true, but it’s all what you make of it and it sounds like you’ve made your way strongly in the face of tough circumstances. Have you read “Man’s Search for Meaning”? It’s a great example of this kind of “turning a bad into a good.” Great book too.

  • Always need to look for the upside in situations and put a positive spin on it, or else you’ll grow crazy and become depressed. Always have to enjoy your life. I had a job loss myself and was devastated at first, but realized I couldn’t stand the job, but it did help lead me to my next job which I like more. Always have to look at the positives, life’s too short.

  • I started taking public transportation after I got a new job and found out parking downtown would cost me $80/month. Now, I really enjoy taking public transportation because it’s much more relaxing and I can read while commuting to and from work.

Whenever something happens that pisses me off I usually try to remind myself that it’s really not that bad and that a lot of worse things could have happened. Looking at the positives is key.

  • There’s a reason that plants don’t grow on mountain tops and only grow in the valleys. It’s during these valleys in our lives that growth truly occurs.
