Hidden costs when renting a car

When shopping around for car rentals, remember that there are more costs involved in renting a car than just the daily rate. Typical fees include the daily rate, sales taxes, airport surcharges, license recover fees, loss damage waivers, personal accident insurance, after hours return fees and more. There are also a few fees charged under certain circumstances, such as fees for drivers who are under 25 years old, and fees for special equipment such as ski racks, etc. All of these fees can make your “daily rate” of say $12 jump to $60 or even more. And then there are the costs of driving and refueling it…

So, before you rent a car, be sure you understand exactly what the final cost will be before you sign on the dotted line. Also, when comparing different companies, be sure that you compare ALL of the fees you’re likely to be charged so that you can tell which rental is truly the better value. Don’t forget to factor in possible discounts from AAA, your credit card company, or your car insurance company as well.
