Hm, this isn’t the kind of observation I wanted to make

I was at a get-together recently that had seven adults attending. Out of the seven:

  • Two were currently laid off
  • One was currently on mandatory furlough
  • Two had been laid off within the previous year but had found new jobs since then
  • And one had had layoffs at work but escaped

That’s 6 out of 7 people!

And it’s not like we live in Michigan or work in the financial or mortgage industry.

Actually, now that I think of it, the only person who hadn’t had any layoff-related event happen to them does work in the financial industry. Hopefully that person continues to escape unscathed.

The rest of us work in computer hardware, software, education, and retail. And all of us were extremely busy at work and valued employees. It’s not a lack of (direct) work that’s producing the layoffs, it’s a lack of m-o-n-e-y.

There was some talk about how the unemployment office might be a good place to apply for work, but then someone else said (jokingly? I’m not sure) that they were having to let people go as well.

  • A group of seven friends (you did say it was a “get-together”, right?) is hardly what I’d call a control group representative of the population. More likely, this is a case of birds of a feather, flocking together…

  • I had a similar observation at a bar with some friends last week. Thankfully I’m of the type that has avoided a layoff, but I work in banking so we’ll see how long that lasts.

About the only place doing some serious hiring these days is the US Census Bureau.

  • Nope, not a control group, just part of my life experience. But we were relatives from about age 30-60, from 3 cities, 4 basic industries, and 7 different employers.

  • Yikes. About the best news I gathered from my group of friends, some of whom are still students, is that one was given a promotion in name and work only, with no raise to accompany it. Hey, more work is sort of a way to demonstrate more value to the company, right?
