Home improvement
This was another home improvement weekend for me. It was a very mild one though, because I’m forcing myself to severely limit my new projects — which means that what I’m “allowing” myself to work on are projects that were already in progress. We live in a 1970’s ranch house, and the only updates the previous (original) owners had made to it were installing storm windows (??) and putting in new linoleum, so there were lots of things to update. It’s taken us quite a while, since we wait until we have the money & time for things. But I’m especially proud of our bathrooms — I finished up one of them this weekend (the last thing to do was replacing the mirror) and the other bathroom is now about 60% done. (All that’s left on that one is replacing the shower & painting.)
Bathrooms are generally thought to be one of the more expensive rooms to renovate, but we’ve kept costs down by doing almost all of the work ourselves, not changing the location of where the plumbing enters the rooms, getting bargains, and refurbishing some of the existing items. For example, instead of replacing the vanities, we’ve painted one set and will be re-staining the other.
Now we have a new mirror that I got for cost at the frame shop when I went to pick up the one I’d ordered for the other bathroom. The framer had had it in the shop for a couple of years (I assume whoever ordered it never picked it up) and it happened to go perfectly in our bathroom. So we both got a deal — he got his money back, and I got something I would have bought anyway at a great price. I love dealing with small businesses. (And I try to most of the time anyway, considering I run a couple of small businesses myself.)
