I don’t do this often…

but I really loved My Two Dollars’ post called “Which Jones Family Are You Trying to Keep Up With“. Take a look at it :)

That post came at an especially good time for me too — right after I found myself comparing our life with someone else’s; someone whose life is really very different from mine. Then I read the Jones Family article, which suggests that we spend our time comparing ourselves to people that are not like us — people on TV and in advertisements. David over at My Two Dollars says:

“Just something to give some thought to before you feel like people have better stuff than you, more stuff than you, are more successful than you. Take a minute to check out your true surroundings, and not the fake ones created on television. I think you will find that most everyone around is just like you, and there is no one you need to be keeping up with.”

When I actually looked around our neighborhood, I realized that our house looks a lot nicer than several of the houses on our street. Ours has fresh paint, a roof that’s in good shape, and mostly-trimmed landscaping. And the cars? Many of the cars on our street are actually work trucks: pool repair trucks, window replacement trucks, etc. Then there are a few older SUVs and a number of newer economy cars. Really, we fit in just fine, and most important of all we can actually afford the things we have. We enjoy them, and we don’t have things hanging around that weigh on us or that we don’t use.
