I need to watch the big-ticket items too
A recent review of my spending over the past 12 months showed me one thing: I need to watch my spending on the big-ticket items too. I’ve so gotten used to looking for small savings here and there, and watching what I buy in small amounts, that I sometimes overlook the big picture.
Looking for a trend has shown me that I’ve spent anywhere from $100 to $1400 on a single big-ticket item every month. Plus I’ve usually bought more than one big-ticket item each month — sometimes three or four items. The majority of those were planned (including a large expense this month) but maybe it’s time to take a look at those categories and plan on spending less in some of them.
After all, in addition to continuing to save money on small expenses in a variety of areas, I’ll realize significantly more savings if I also cut out one or two $100+ personal expenses and one $350 business expense each month. And in theory it shouldn’t be too hard to say no to one or two big things each month.
