If it’s not one thing, it’s another

I mentioned previously that we were going to be remodeling our master bathroom. Work won’t start on that for quite a while, but since our plan is to use the hall bathroom while they do the work on our master, I thought I’d better make sure that was ok.

You see, we haven’t used the tub/shower in the hall bathroom for about 7 years. We keep the shower curtain closed on that and just ignore it. It’s a good thing I checked too, because I discovered that there was some rust on the tub. Closer inspection revealed that not only was there rust, but there was a HOLE in the tub.

Apparently the handle has been slowly drip drip dripping for a very long time. You actually have to sit and watch it for a while to see it drip. But I guess years of slow drips equals rust, which equals a hole.

We want to do the work on the hall bathroom before work starts on the master bath. We’ll have to fix the leak and replace the tub in there, which also means repairing the tile on the floor and replacing the tile in the surround. I can’t say I’m sad about getting rid of the yellowish 70s tile surround, but still, we’re looking at probably an additional $2000-$3000 to make the hall bath usable again and to prevent further damage.

Ouch.

This is a classic case of not paying attention costing big money. Small things that aren’t taken care of early on (like a very small drip that could have been fixed for about $200) result in a big expense and a lot of work later.

I think I finally get the message.

Our AC condensor/compressor broke 2 weeks ago. Good thing it’s starting to cool down out here (even though last weekend it was a muggy 95, good thing we have a window unit in our bedroom). We had a few contractors come over to have a look at the situation, and they all agreed that the condensor (outside unit) as well as the coil were over 15 years old, and should be replaced by matching units to maximize efficiency (our house is not cooled evenly at all, due to poor placement of the air exchange, yes, singular). Then we found out that our furnace is 22 years old, and rather than wait till it breaks, we’re having it replaced at the same time as the AC. That will prevent additional costs for having people come out (especially during winter time when the price will undoubtedly go up) and we’ll have a much more efficient heating system for the upcoming months. It’s a big expense, but at least we had some spare money after refinancing our mortgage this year, specifically for this reason (our home repair/improvement fund). We won’t have to put anything on a credit card.
But yeah, if it’s not one thing, it’s the other.
