Our AC condensor/compressor broke 2 weeks ago. Good thing it's starting to cool down out here (even though last weekend it was a muggy 95, good thing we have a window unit in our bedroom). We had a few contractors come over to have a look at the situation, and they all agreed that the condensor (outside unit) as well as the coil were over 15 years old, and should be replaced by matching units to maximize efficiency (our house is not cooled evenly at all, due to poor placement of the air exchange, yes, singular). Then we found out that our furnace is 22 years old, and rather than wait till it breaks, we're having it replaced at the same time as the AC. That will prevent additional costs for having people come out (especially during winter time when the price will undoubtedly go up) and we'll have a much more efficient heating system for the upcoming months. It's a big expense, but at least we had some spare money after refinancing our mortgage this year, specifically for this reason (our home repair/improvement fund). We won't have to put anything on a credit card.
But yeah, if it's not one thing, it's the other.
