Is knowing your credit score always important?

I don’t know my credit scores for sure, although I have an idea of the range of both my & my husband’s scores. I just know that I’ve never had a problem getting credit.

But sometimes I get curious, and debate finding out what my FICO scores are for sure. Of course, I don’t actually want to pay to find out my credit scores, so that makes things a little more difficult. I suppose I could sign up for the free trial on MyFICO.com, but I’m not sure I want to bother.

After all, is knowing your credit score always important? I don’t think so. It could be, if you had difficulty obtaining credit (or good interest rates) and were actively working to improve your score. In that case, I think that seeing regular progress would indicate that you were doing the right kinds of things, which might help further improve your scores.

But if you rarely borrow money and aren’t interested in buying a house in the next few years? I’m not sure that it’s so important. I think finding out your credit scores in that case is more of an urge to compare ourselves to others.

I’ll admit it, I’d be happy if my scores turned out to be in the 800’s, but what good would knowing that do me? I think it’s more important to check your credit reports regularly, since there is a much greater potential for something unexpected or inaccurate to appear on those. And if your credit reports are fine, chances are your scores will be as well.

PenFed should send you a letter telling you your credit score, after your loan closes.
