It’s easy — but a lot of work

Have you ever started a project, thinking to yourself that it’ll be easy?

“How hard can it be?” is pretty much a mantra of mine, so I start projects with that thought all the time. (I still don’t understand why my husband always laughs!)

But gradually I’ve come to learn that “It’s easy” is often true in the same way that picking up rocks is easy:

All you do is pick up the rocks. There are no complicated steps involved, no huge learning curve to get through first, no advanced rock-picker-upper training classes to take, no struggling with the weight (assuming the rocks fit in your hand), etc.

But pick up a whole PILE of rocks and move them somewhere else, and while it’s still “easy”, it’s also a lot of work. Hard work.

You sweat, you think the pile is never going to end, you fall into bed exhausted at the end of the day, and you wake up sore. You wonder what you ever got yourself into.

(Can you tell I’ve helped move several tons of rock?)

So, if you’re like me and tend to start a lot of projects like these, you may want build in extra time for all of the extra effort that may not be apparent right up front. Even uncomplicated things can be an awful lot of hard work, especially when they’re done right. Or they can require a very large investment of time.

Plan for the long haul, and you won’t be tempted to give up early. This is especially true of things like debt reduction, saving for retirement, or saving for some other goal.

The actual steps are pretty simple: keep sending money to the creditors or keep setting aside money for retirement and other savings goals each week. But like that pile of rocks, it may take you longer than you expected or it may seem as if you’ll never get to where you want to be.

But you will. It “just” takes hard work and persistence.

Thanks for posting an encouraging post! I feel like I’ve been working hard to pay off debt for such a long time and have another several years to go! Good to know that it will happen eventually!
