Maybe it’s time for a home energy audit
We’ve been gradually working on making our home more energy efficient, and I’d thought we were doing pretty well: We saw a 10% per month reduction in our electric bill when we changed out our front door, and it looks like we’re seeing another reduction from replacing two windows. We’ve also felt a physical difference in the amount of heat in our house because we changed to CFLs and insulated the attic access.
But…
A quick conversation with some co-workers revealed that our house is probably still much less energy-efficient than newer houses. They have the same size houses as ours (or larger) keep their air conditioning 5 to 10 degrees cooler than we do, and have smaller bills than us. I’m thinking of calling the electric company to see if they offer home energy audits, and even if they don’t, figuring out a way to do one myself. I know that we need better insulation in the attic, and to finish replacing the windows, but maybe there are other things we can do as well.
