Motorist Facts That’ll Make You Think Twice About Your Auto Policy

As a commuter, you know that car insurance is a necessity. Even if you’ve never had to file a claim, you know your insurance company has your back. But does your policy protect you in all scenarios?

Every motorist on the road has had to have passed their driver’s test to be allowed the privilege of getting behind the wheel. But not everyone takes their newfound responsibility seriously. Let’s look at some of the dangers that are out on the road, all preventable, unfortunately not all avoidable.

Texting While Driving

According to USA Today, cell phone use is the cause of 26 percent of the country’s auto accidents, with 5 percent of traffic collisions being the direct result of texting behind the wheel. Texting and driving is one of the worst things a motorist can do.

Texting and driving endangers everyone on the road. It takes drivers a full five seconds (at a minimum) to check their phones and respond to a text. If they’re driving at 55 miles per hour, they’re driving the full length of a football field without looking up at the road once. In 2013, close to 330,000 motorists were injured in an accident caused by texting and driving, with 3,154 people dying as a direct result.

Talking While Driving

If you think that just texting behind the wheel of a car is a danger, imagine home many people are talking on their phone. Aside from the simple fact that they are limiting both their field of vision and the turning radius of their head to check for blind spots, they’re also minimizing their ability to steer by having one hand away from the wheel. According to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), talking on the phone and driving is as hazardous as getting behind the wheel after a few drinks.

Eating While Driving

A lot of us are guilty of this: eating and driving. Long road trips make us hungry and drive-thrus are convenient. But eating and driving just isn’t safe. It’s been found that motorists who eat and drive are 3.6 times more likely to be involved in an auto accident than their non-distracted counterparts.

Drunk Driving

While state laws are tough on drunk driving offenders, there are people out there who are still willing to get out on the road after a night at the bar or after a party with friends.

It has been found that one out of every 50 to 60 drivers is impaired. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, then count every car that passes you the next time you’re on the highway. Be sure to count the cars on the other side of the median as well, and consider every 50th car as being operated by an impaired driver.

It isn’t just an accident that can throw you for a loop, what happens to your auto insurance premium is a big deal too. In some cases, your insurance company may not support your claim, will raise your premiums, or drop you from the plan altogether. To get an insurance policy that’ll protect through thick and thin, compare car insurance rates with sites like CoverHound. They’ll match you up with an insurer that has your best interests at heart.

While all of the top safety features are only getting better, it’s essential that you respect the rules of road. When you think of it that way you already have to be careful, but when you consider how crazy some people are with their habits then you had better be covered when it comes to insurance.
