My checking account is empty most of the time
And that’s the way I like it.
I’ve gotten my account down to a dollar or so before in the past few months, and it hasn’t bothered me a bit. In fact I’m usually happy about it, because I know that means that I’m not about to spend money on things that I don’t need or really even want beyond the spur-of-the-moment-urge. (Usually that refers to eating out.) Having money in my checking account is just like having cash burning a hole in my pocket.
To avoid temptation, I tend to transfer money to savings or investments as soon as I have some that isn’t earmarked for bills or normal expenses. I don’t “save up” in my checking account first. After all, the money there is only earning some microscopically low interest rate, so what’s the point? Better to get it moved over right away.
Doing this also causes me to save and invest more than I would have otherwise, which is another bonus.
