Not spending fifty-eight bucks
Son’s glasses frames broke yesterday, and the timing was pretty bad. We can’t get him new glasses until he goes for the eye exam because his old prescription is expired. I had already called last month to schedule an eye exam for him, but there was a very long wait and his appointment isn’t until early April. At the time I didn’t think the wait would be that big of a deal, but then again, I didn’t know his glasses were about to break.
So, like I said, bad timing. First I tried calling to see if there was a cancellation, but no go. Then I gave Costco a call to see if the frames were still under warranty. They told me that I needed to bring the glasses in so that they could look at them before they could tell me anything, so we spent about an hour last night driving there & back at rush hour. After a few minutes’ search in the computer, they told us that the warranty had expired. (I’m still not sure why they couldn’t have told us that over the phone.) However, they directed us to a shop about 2 miles away that might be able to repair them temporarily. So we drove over there too, only to find out that they wanted $58 to weld the frame together. (And I’m not even sure what their turn-around time would have been.) Since I could probably get him entirely new frames for about $80, I declined.
The big downside to this is that he has a tiny piece of duct tape holding them together now. It’s on the side, so I HOPE it’s not horribly noticeable. I’m feeling like a bad mom at the moment, but I just did not want to pay $58 for not even 3 weeks of use. Maybe I can find someone with a soldering iron… I wouldn’t even be WONDERING this if they were my glasses. Heck I’ve held glasses together with a paperclip before, just because I couldn’t find others that I liked better. But, I’m not in middle school. Ugh.

Another option for your glasses needs http://www.39dollarglasses.com
$59 is crazy for a repair.
Can you get him in somewhere else for the exam?

Whenever you get a new eyeglass ’script, do yourself a favor and get an extra pair for emergencies. Especially for your kids. A Google search with the obvious search terms will return a bunch of sites for cheap glasses. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of the local opticians.
