One thing (almost) off the list

A new article is posted each day on Blunt Money, where you get plain talk about money and personal finance. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

One of our financial goals has been to get our estate planning squared away. My husband has never had a will before, and mine needed updating, so we had an appointment with an estate planning attorney recently to do just that. They will be doing a will, a living will, a durable general power of attorney, and a durable health care power of attorney for each of us, along with creating an affidavit of trust that basically explains that I’m still me and still the trustee of my existing trust agreement even though my name has changed. I’m glad to have that almost out of the way now. It’s one of those things that you don’t generally look forward to doing, but feel very relieved once it’s done. (Especially if you have children or have ever had to handle the estate of a loved one.)

I think it’s important to plan in advance. And especially now with what’s going on with burying Anna Nicole Smith it’s a good idea to get your wishes in writing.

Couldn’t agree more. There’s nothing more important we can do for our families and oursleves than get our estate planning sorted out. Learn what it’s all about first, then talk to your family about what you’re trying to achieve and why, then get some good advice from someone you feel confident with. Simple! Anna Nicole (the Patron Saint of Estate Planning?) did everyone a favor by getting us talking, I reckon.

Apparently I live under a rock, because I don’t know what’s going on with Anna Nicole Smith - other than that she died.

Great post! These things are not “pleasant” to think about, but they are so very, very important… I just recently updated our Wills. It was strange thinking about ‘end of life’ issues, but I felt it was the responsible thing to do…
