Receipt for Your Payment to…(what payment?)
I was greeted this morning with an email from PayPal, giving me a receipt for “my” payment to some company, in the amount of close to $200. At first I thought it was yet another phishing email, because I know that I don’t live in or know anyone in Indonesia where the product is being shipped to. But I figured I’d better make sure, so I logged in (without following a link) to my PayPal account, and sure enough there was a record of a payment being made in that amount. Ugh.
So I changed my password to some insane thing, and filed an unauthorized activity claim. I then called my bank (which my PayPal account is linked to) but as of yet they have no record of the charge trying to go through. Hopefully it won’t. Finally, I tried giving the company a call that the product was apparently ordered from after looking up their phone number on Google, but that call went to voice mail and then a notice that the voice mail box was full. Hmm. I hope that this whole thing is resolved quickly.
Update: About 40 minutes after I wrote this, I received a notice from PayPal saying that the matter was resolved & that they had approved my claim. Whew!

Do you have any idea how this could have happened in the first time? Kinda scary.

Nope, I have no idea. Maybe some kind of cracking software?

Yikes! Glad you got that resolved.

Oh wow that is crazy. When I first saw your title I thought it was that scam. I can’t believe it really was a charge. Hope nothing else happens! Do you happen to use the paypal debit card or anything like that? Maybe someone got your number from that or that virtual card paypal offers.

No, I don’t use the PayPal debit card. This is making me re-think having my bank account linked to PayPal, but I’m not sure there’s even another option for that. Also, I rechecked my bank account later and the transaction did show up. PayPal said that the money should hopefully be returned by Monday. At least they are very responsive.
