Restlessness and spending money

I spent some time this past weekend relaxing, and almost instantly became ridiculously restless. (Probably I didn’t know what to do with myself with some actual time off, after all the stuff I’ve been working on lately.)

At any rate I got the urge to “go do something”. Now I know there are plenty of things to do for free, and in fact I did several of them: I played a game, finished reading a book, cleaned up a little, and worked in the garden.

But I was still feeling restless, so I went and did something I’ve been wanting to do for a couple of weeks: we drove up to the Container Store, where I proceeded to spend money like it was going out of style.

(It’s amazing how expensive all that “organizational” stuff is.)

3 hours later (the store is a long way away — we weren’t there for 3 hours!) we returned home, and I felt relaxed.

Why, I thought, couldn’t I have felt that way without spending money?

I think the reason was that I really wanted the things that I bought. I’d seen an undershelf basket online that would save me from near daily-annoyance, so I’d been wanting to get that for awhile now. There were some other things that the Container Store carried that I’d been wanting as well. Just the drive up there was stopping me, but the combination of wanting the items and actually having the free time made me restless. It felt good to finally get that done.

While there, I found a certain kind of shelf brackets that I hadn’t been able to find anywhere else, that will allow me to finally (with the help of my husband) finish up a project that’s been on my list for YEARS.

So maybe sometimes it’s like a variation of the old saying about money & happiness. Except in this case it’s “Money can’t cure restlessness, but it sure does help.”

I am the same way, when I’m bored sometimes I will go drive around and end up getting something I have no need for. Maybe a small snack when I wasn’t hungry. Or a dvd or something, it’s a bad thing to do.

It should be fine because you did mention that these were things you’d been wanting to buy for a while. It sounds like you waited the mandatory cooling off period on impulse buys.

Haha… I feel that way sometimes too. Though we preach frugal living and spending less now so you can live better later, etc.. It’s sure nice to spend a little money. Feels good, doesn’t it?

I’ve been restless too! I keep changing my life to keep from getting restless actually, something I just realized recently. Spending a little extra money may be less of a hassle then moving every two years though, which is how I’ve been dealing…

It happend to me this weekend, too.
I was bored and went out and spend almost $400 on clothing.
    But, I needed it …?

Thanks for the post. I get this restlessness all the time. I took it for lack of “peace” with the whole frugal thing. Maybe it just is too much frugalness. When I get restless – I end up at a fabric store buying way too much fabric.
