Reviewing my asset allocation

It’s a good idea to review your asset allocation (the types of things you are invested in) regularly so that you can achieve the balance of investments you want. It’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed mine, so now is a good time to do so for me. The types of assets I am invested in are:

Real estate (although I will leave that off for now, since our house’s main function is as a place to live)
Large cap stocks and mutual funds
Mid cap stocks and index funds
Small cap stocks and mutual funds
International funds
Treasury bonds
Cash & cash equivalents
Tax liens

And here is the breakdown by percentage:

current asset allocation

Just looking at it, you might think that I had pulled money from mutual funds and put it into cash, since such a large percentage is in cash. But, that’s not remotely true. I’ve actually been putting more money into stocks & mutual funds than I ever have before. They’ve just tanked so badly that it’s skewing the picture.

Now the smart thing to do would be to rebalance and get more of my money out of cash and into investments. Unfortunately, I can’t do that. I need a big chunk of the cash to pay my taxes, and the rest is for my emergency fund. I will continue investing when I get extra cash though, in hopes of eventually getting to where I want to be. Maybe the market will help me out at some point with a turnaround too. That would sure be nice.
