Shoes sitting in my closet

I’m not a big shoe person. I wear size 10 medium, and it’s a struggle to find shoes in my size at all, let alone ones that I like and that are affordable. Apparently the shoe industry is convinced that anyone who wears a size 10 must have wide feet and poor taste too, since 3-4 ugly pairs of 10 wides seem to be all the stores stock.

So I was thrilled when I found the first pair of shoes in my life that were actually cute, fit, were affordable, AND matched a dress I have perfectly. Ridiculously thrilled! Until I wore them.

At first I thought there was something wrong with my left foot. It hurt, a lot. And then my toe went numb for a while. But after a couple of wearings I realized that the numbness only happened when I wore the cute shoes. And it was only my left foot. Eventually I figured out the problem was that the toe I’d broken years back that had never healed properly and so was being pressured in a bizarre way when I wore those shoes. So now I stare longingly at the cute shoes sitting in my closet, wishing I could wear them.

There’s nothing wrong with them at all. And due to my toe, they’ve only been worn for a few hours. But since I’ve worn them, I can’t take them back. It’s frustrating to have lost the money, but it’s even more frustrating to not be able to wear them. Maybe I should just donate them and put myself out of my misery. Anyone want a pair of cute brown shoes?

I have the exact same problem- only my feet are too small for cute shoes. It sucks, ’cause I think shoes are so pretty in general. Oh well, maybe it’s a good thing… if I could find cute shoes easily, I would probably have a lot harder time staying within a budget.

    Shoes!

As a 6’ tall woman with size 11 feet I’ve long envied size 10 wearers (size ten is the largest “standard” size at most shoe stores, and the stores that do carry size 11’s usually stock one or two of each style so unless I get their the day the stock comes in, I’m out of luck)…. At least I did until I met women who were size 12 and larger!

Anyway, just wanted to say that Zappos online has been a life- and style-saver – they carry many, many styles and brands size ten and larger AND offer free shipping both ways; you can return (unworn) shoes for up to a year. In my case they also refunded me in full for a beautifully styled, but poorly constructed, pair of boots (after two months they literally ripped along a seam sewed too close to the edge of the leather).

I’ve had good luck at Designer Shoe Warehouse as they get new stock in weekly.
John Fleuvog makes funky stylish shoes and often carry up to size 12 in women’s shoes.
And the Skechers website carries far more 11s (and 10s, but nothing larger than 11) than their brick and mortar stores – they have the very casual shoes they’re best known for and a dressier line, Soho lab.

I’d love to know if anyone out there knows of other resources out there – I’m always looking!!

BTW, thank you for your terrific blog – its part of my regular reading as I get my $$$ act together!

My big left toe: same thing!

can’t you get it stretched out by a shoe repair person?

Thanks for the commiserating guys :)

Nicole, it’s a sandal and it’s not too small or anything. I think it’s the angle of the sole, it just puts a lot of pressure on my badly-healed toe.

Talking about shoes. My late mother always insisted that whenever we got new shoes
(rarely), we had to bite the tip of the shoe. According to my mum, this was to
stop the shoe from “biting” us.

    I still do it quietly.
