I suspect the US Military and the transportation of food and things are 2 big energy guzzlers. I think ending the war in Iraq / Afghanistan and closing military bases on foreign soil as well as here at home would make an impact. How is the military transitioning to alternative fuels?

Buying local is easier said than done but changing laws so it is possible to run neighborhood farms and other small neighborhood businesses out of homes would help.

I don't see rationing being a viable option as far as gas, or any other nonrenewable resource. I do like the your idea to require applicable companies to offer a telecommuting plan. I also approve of a gas tax to support alternative energy and more pedestrian-friendly city infrastructures.

Thanks for the mention! Strangely this topic is one that's popping up more and more as the price of gas goes up. Rather than trying to curtail gas spending what about putting a $1/gallon surcharge that would go directly to funding sustainable alternate energy sources.

If you look at the computer industry in the span of about 20 years we've gone from being awed at a computer in the home to shunning those that don't have one. The reality is that if the resources are there a great deal can be accomplished in a fairly short amount of time. For the cost of the Iraq war the US could have come up with technology and infrastructure to completely remove its reliance on Oil.

Makes you question the motives of those in power.
