Spending less on a home improvement

Our home came with a little pantry, which amounted to a few cabinets set in a corner of the kitchen, as you can see below.

But see that space to the right of the cabinets? It bugged the heck out of me. “Why,” I thought, “couldn’t the builder have used cabinets that FIT?”

After all, they would only have needed to be about a foot wider, and we’d have had extra storage space. There also wouldn’t have been a random square foot of completely useless space in the kitchen.

Eventually I decided to go down to see about getting cabinets that fit, and I quickly found out why the builder hadn’t done so. They would’ve had to have been a custom size. Custom size = horrifically expensive.

On to Plan B, I thought. Maybe I could just get an end piece with open shelving to take up the remaining space. Yes, that was an option. But at about $679 if I installed it myself. Yeah, that wasn’t happening. (One from IKEA would have been cheaper, but didn’t quite come in the right size.)

So finally I decided enough was enough. I would just attach shelves to the wall instead. But once again, I ran into the problem of finding ones that both looked the way I wanted and fit the way I wanted.

In the end, I bought a saw, some wood, and some brackets, and my husband and I cut them out and put them together. We had also painted the existing cabinets previously, so I used leftover paint from that to match the shelves.

The result was significantly less expensive, and I’m very happy with the new shelves for my cookbooks and food-related books.

There’s always saved money, more joy and pride if you did it yourself. OK, not always! Only if it looks good at the end, doesn’t leak, and you didn’t hurt yourself. Nice job!

That’s a terrific solution. You can tell that you did it right if it looks like it belongs there. Good planning on your part!

Home improvement is a never-ending and expensive process, which can take quite a bit out of you financially. I love what you have done with the small amount of space you had. Looking at your before and after shots, I am convinced that I can also make small changes to my house without spending a fortune.
