State goals postively
If you take a look at your spending and discover that you have more month left than money, you may decide that you need to cut back. But “cutting back” is a negative goal because it’s talking about doing less of something. In other words, in order to achieve your goal you would have to NOT do certain things.
It’s better to format goals in a positive manner. In this instance a goal like “Cut back on spending” could be transformed into “Pay all bills on time and add an additional $50 per week to my savings”. Stating goals positively is also a good way to ensure that you actually reach them. For example, it’s easier to keep track of how often you do something than it is to notice that you haven’t done something. Focusing on what you do want to accomplish also sends your thoughts and efforts in the right direction.
