They won’t do it if you don’t ask
Do you know people who have flexible hours at work, who work at home, or who have more vacation time than other people in similar positions? What about people who get their education paid for by their workplace, even though the company they work for doesn’t have a formal tuition-reimbursement program in place? What about people who get regular raises, while the other employees never seem to get called in for reviews?
How do you think those people get those kinds of perks?
I’ve found that most of the time it’s because those people ask for what they want. Just the act of asking for things can change your life for the better. After all, have you ever heard of employers who go around asking their employees how they can make life easier for them? It’s just not done, most of the time. (I did actually work for a dot com once where that was the case, but I’m pretty sure that was the exception to the rule.)
If you want something from an employer that you’re not getting, go ask for it. Just be sure you’re doing a noticeably outstanding job first. Don’t let the fact that “no one else” has flexible hours, or “no one else” has gotten a raise deter you. Probably everyone else is sitting around assuming that it’s not a possibility. But you can be different.

The is a book called “The Aladdin Factor” by Jack Canfield that is about this same thing. How to get what you want by asking. It is kinda old now I guess but I love it. My copy is all dog eared and highlighted.

This is so true! Most people are just so terrified of rejection that they’d rather daydream about flex time instead of asking for it.
I put up a post about the proper way to ask your boss for a flex time arrangement (click on my name for the article). Basically, I covered the following: what options are out there, the advantages, disadvantages, where you can find it, and how to get it from your current boss.
I think one of the reasons why most people don’t ask is because they figure they have nothing valuable to offer to the person they’re going to be asking from, and therefore they just stay put.
No one got anywhere in life by wishing it away. Actually, not only do you have to ask, you also have to be persistent about it!
