This kind of attitude helps

A red convertible pulled up next to my car on the freeway the other day. “Oh it’s a Ferrari,” I thought, as I noticed the little horse emblem on it. “I wonder if it purrs, it’s too loud to tell on the freeway.” I glanced over at the driver, who smiled at me as he began pulling slowly away.

“Cool license plate!” was my next thought.

You see, it had a long narrow license plate on it, like they have in Europe, except the plate was from Texas. I immediately launched into wondering if Texas had a special form to request different shaped license plates, remembering how my friends from Germany wanted to collect U.S. plates, thinking of the different types of plates our state offers and how sometimes it’s hard to even tell what state they’re from, etc.

Yeah, a Ferrari passes me, and I’m impressed by the license plate.

But that’s exactly the kind of attitude that helps me to save money and reach my goals. I don’t base what I want on what’s “cool” according to outside standards. I base it on the things that interest me. I’m happy with my own little red convertible, which could be blown away by anything with 6 cylinders. I rarely feel the need to “keep up”. There are things that I want, of course, but let’s put it this way…I dreamt that I bought a foreclosed house last night.

That is a good attitude! And know what else is good? That your attitude can appreciate a fine car, and a cool plate, without being jealous about it or hating on the person who has it. Admiring the wealthy is a good step for becoming wealthy (after all, you won’t become something you hate, right?)
