The most issues that I struggled with when I first started using a credit card again was how to track my purchases. I wanted to be able to see exactly where I was spending my money at a glance.

A great idea! I just wish Quicken/MS Money was more canadian-oriented.. I've had to resort to using Excel.

1. For tracking daily expenses - cash, credit cards, banks, whatever

2. For tracking credit card line items - each time my CC posts a line item, I put it in my Excel sheet, then I make a little column that matches up my payments to clear each line item.. E.g. Expense 1 = $50, Expense 2 = $50, one Payment of $100, I mark all 3 columns with "A", so I can data filter and sort it to see that I paid, and the blank spots are what I haven't cleared yet. I do this for all 3 credit cards (2 personal, 1 corporate)

3. Budget for the month, tied in to the expenses I track in #1

4. Loan amount and how much I paid towards it, tied to the expenses/budget in #1 and #3

PHEW..

It takes a while to really do all of it, but I find it keeps me busy (good), keeps my mind off shopping (v. v. v. good), and has really shown me where all of my money has been going (best).

Bravo! I think the current advice that most people will give you is to cut out credit card use altogether. While that would be great if it were doable, I don't think it's realistic. I use an almost identical system myself to keep the credit card monster under control.
