Turn out the lights
Anyone who’s ever been a kid has heard “turn out the lights!” more than once. It’s good advice for saving money too, especially now that energy costs are at a premium. But what about when you want to have the lights on?
Use compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs cost more initially than regular light bulbs, but they last much longer and save electricity (and therefore money) when they’re in use. Another big advantage to them (especially in hot climates) is that they don’t put out heat the way regular bulbs do. (The last thing we want most of the time where I live are more blasts of heat.) The only disadvantages to them that I’ve found is that they may not work well on dimmer switches or in ceiling fans.
Keep in mind when buying compact fluorescent bulbs that wattage doesn’t equal brightness. Wattage refers to energy use, not how much light the bulb will put out. So you’ll be able to replace your higher-watt bulbs with significantly lower-watt compact fluorescent bulbs while still enjoying the same amount of light. Visit “Mr. Electricity’s” site for more ideas on how to save electricity on lighting, and remember that you’ll be saving money too.
