Update on the wardrobe consultation

I had my wardrobe consultation recently, and it actually went better than I’d even hoped. (If a little differently than I’d originally envisioned.) It went like this:

She instructed me ahead of time to lay out ALL of my clothes, so I piled them all on the bed in several stacks. All the shirts together, skirts and dresses, jeans, pants, sweaters, workout clothes. I put my shoes out on the floor.

She’d asked me whether I had things like jackets, a tailored white shirt, and accessories, and when I said no (or rather “uh…I might have a white shirt?”) she said she would bring some of hers along so I could see how they could be used. She arrived (along with the promised items) and got right to work.

She took at look at my clothes and began laying them out in ways I’d never imagined before. She was working magic! All of a sudden most of my clothes (that I’d only known to wear with jeans) were looking great instead of ho-hum in all kinds of different combination. I shot quick pictures of each combination so I could remember later what she’d done. It was really amazing.

She also advised that some of my clothes were dated (big surprise, since I’ve had a few of them for oh…10 or 15 years?) and that some just wouldn’t work. None of those were items I’d been wearing anyway (with one exception that had shrunk) so I just put them all in the Goodwill bag. I got rid of about 11 items.

She ended up making 28 different outfits for me out of 3 pairs of pants, 2 skirts, 2 dresses, 11 shirts, and 4 sweaters. There, now you know the entire contents of my closet! She advised me to buy a few tees and camis for layering, plus some accessories and a couple of pairs of shoes. If I follow what she did, I should be able to make about 40 different outfits after buying those additional items.

I’m happy with the results, especially because she really opened my eyes to a different way of seeing clothes. I’d never really known what to do with them before, except to wear shirts with jeans. My husband and I went to the mall later that night, and we kept noticing that people wear jewelry and accessories. I mean, I knew that before, but I never realized how it completely changed an outfit.

I think this is a fabulous idea. Friends of mine have “shopped thier closets,” but I know I could totally use some help in putting together outfits. As a plus-size gal, I’m constantly frustrated by how few decent options I have. Ug! ANYWAY, how did you find this person?

I heard about her from a friend of mine, but I think you could maybe search for wardrobe stylist or wardrobe consultation and find someone. I swear I felt like she was giving girl lessons. Which apparently was what I needed.

You seemed to suggest that it was about $25/hour. What was the actual rate and how long did it take?

  4. # 4 bluntmoney Says:

RMWaterloo, yes that was the rate, and it took about an hour and a half. But she suggested doing a trade instead so I went with that :)

Was she a short rude little woman like on that show ‘What Not to Wear’ … ?
    Definitely a great idea.
I’ve actually been going to some high-end stores just to look around and get ideas on how to change my image.
There’s no way I’m paying $350 for a jacket with a crocodile on it, but it’s given me ideas on finding something similarly styled and cheaper, of course.

Heh TStrump, nope, not short or rude!

wow… maybe i should do this. i have too many clothes and will soon be moving overseas. Having someone help me pare down my wardrobe and help me pick out items that will give me best/most flexible use sounds like a really smart move at this point in my life!

OMG I need that so badly. $25 an hour is a good deal for that.
