What does money mean to you?

As a little kid, money meant excitement. When I had money I could go out and buy something exciting (some ice cream, a model horse, tokens for the video games).

Basically as soon as someone gave me money, I excitedly went out and spent it.

I also felt very grown up when my mom would let me fill out a check to pay for the groceries, or get money out of the ATM for her.

As a teen, money meant freedom + excitement.

Not only could I go out and buy the things I wanted (fast food, movies) but I could put gas in my car and go places on my own. That feeling grew even stronger when I took a couple of trips to Europe.

In my twenties and early thirties, money meant relief (from worry and stress) and sometimes freedom (taking a few trips).

Now that I’m in my forties, money and I have less of a one-sided relationship.

I expect it to work for me, instead of me just working for it.

It still symbolizes freedom, but it also means security (or at least as much security as any of us ever have). I think of it more as a tool that I can use, instead of something that might just “happen” to me at the whim of others.

I also think of it as a way to help reach my goals.

What does money mean to you?

Has its meaning changed over the years?

Money means something to look forward to! I get so excited to “collect” more money, mostly so that I can play with it: Invest in stock market, pay down mortgage, contribute to RRSP, and go on trips!

Wow, so true to see how the definition of money and our relatonship with it changes over time and how it is earned and used.

Money is a way I can do first what I need to do in my life and second what I want to do in my life. I like zeromoney’s collection idea, sounds more like a scavenger hunt and more fun then the boring way I think of it a lot of the time!

For me, money now means freedom … to not have to work at a job I hate.
When I was a kid, it simply meant food and the occasional cool toy.
