What I've done in the past is ask myself if I really want something or is it a impulse want. If I can honestly say to myself that I really want something I'll find a way to get it without debt. If I can't then it'll have to wait till I have the money because I know I DON'T want more debt I like the approach; I might have to try it.

I have found that this tends to be a long process, and rewarding yourself as you reached the major milestones will allow you to maintain that focus.
