Look, I don't disagree with the general sentiment, but I think that it is at least partially an illusion or wishful thinking. There is a great deal of chance in life. In fact, it could be argued that chance has a lot more impact on your life (financial or otherwise) than you planning.

Where you were born impacts your fortunes; who your parents were and what their financial fortunes impacts you to a great degree; your luck in the genetic draw impacts your talents and abilities dramatically; your health is only partially within your control.

Planning is good. It is necessary. Personal responsibility is certainly a critical element in making the most of your situation, but saying that you are anywhere near to being in full control of your situation is simply wrong.

Very true. Being what we are now is the result of all the decisions we have done in the past. There are a lot of mistakes and mostly cannot be avoided. But the most important is that you learned something from it and be sure to not do the same mistake all over again...

Wow, I just wrote a post for my website that talks about free will, and how many people blame fate for their misfortunes. We are the choices we make, whether it's getting into debt, gaining weight, not exercising, etc. Unhealthy is a choice, as are broke and miserable. It's easy to make excuses; it's harder to take responsibility.
