I’d put the birdseed under Pets: Food. Or maybe Charity, if they weren’t my birds ;)

The idea though is to make the categories meaningful enough that you know where your money is really going, and that it’s going where you want it to.

Here is where that stuff would go in my budget:

towels, kitchen gloves, burners, plants: Household
socks: Clothing
book: Books and Magazines
daughter’s b-day gift: Gifts
hair dye: Personal Care
bird seed: Miscellaneous. :P

Very true, miscellaneous catgories are VERY dangerous.

Bird Seed, Kitechen Gloves, etc = Household Supplies (at least that is where they would go in my spreadsheet)

I thought miscellaneous was for anything I was too lazy to track? For that purpose, it seems to work quite well? Seriously, good point – thanks for helping us to shape up!

Okay was this directed at me? I have a misc. section.

Some of the things are so irregular—

But you are right, I should examine it, and break it down even further.

Some of my misc. stuff:
towels, kitchen gloves, burners, socks, plants, bird seed,book, daughter’s b-day gift, and hair dye.

It’s a catchall –okay okay I’ll try to work on it :)
