Your credit report really does matter
I was recently asked by a new employer for permission to do a background check. Part of the background check included pulling a copy of my credit report. I’d heard of that happening, but had never actually experienced it before.
But there it was, right there in black & white: causes of failure include a bankruptcy within the last year or ever defaulting or paying late on a student loan. I had a brief moment of panic when I read that, thinking “Crap, was that my student loan I was late on once?” Then I remembered it was my mortgage. That’s probably the only time I’ve been grateful that I once paid late on my mortgage. (Many years ago.)
