What is a business school?

A business school is an institution or an establishment that offers specialist teaching to students who want to learn specialist skills regarding the practices, methodologies and application of techniques used effectively in business.

These can be anything from what the latest cutting-edge software is to how to keep afloat with regards to a POS system, it really depends on what the student wants to learn and why.

For example, a student may attend a school in the hopes of becoming a professional marketer. This means they will study a course with modules that place a heavy focus around the application of marketing, a valuable tool in any business that aims to bring in customers – which is, of course, the core function of a business.

With this in mind, in theory any student that wants to go into a career in marketing and enter their profession with the knowledge of what goes into marketing can then take any course at any educational institution that offers modules based around how to market services or products, or anything else a business has to offer its customers.

But the student can then even take this even further still, going into a more specialist area such as e-commerce marketing.

This is where it would make more sense to attend a school that specializes in business, like Hult International Business School for example, in order to attain knowledge around specifically how to market in the online world with efficiency and effectively.

Why do we have business schools?

Business schools exist essentially to train students to become professionals in their chosen careers, and some of those professionals want to focus more on the business side of things instead of the more creative or ad-hoc point of view.

These students are more driven by results, money and management instead of ideas and routine-work, or they’re at least trained to be so once in an educational establishment that revolves heavily around the world of business.

Business schools are also available to offer people the opportunity to become specialist professionals in their chosen industry, and this is a great way to further careers of those students who are already in the real working-world and decide they want to do more based around the selling and fine lines of the business they work for.

In what way do business schools differ from the more usual institutions?

Business schools differ from the usual institutions in that they place a heavy focus around the world of business specifically, and so there’s more like minded people studying in one place under the same roof due to this.

Modules are based more around selling and customers than the regular modules at universities, which may offer more creative-based briefs and modules.

Not only this, but business schools offer more opportunities for their students to study and work at the same time, with sponsored tuition fees and degrees offered at a higher rate than usual institutions, due to the fact that for any business, the core function is its people, and good people make up a good business, leading to good business all round.

With this in mind, it’s a win-win for both businesses and students who want to go into business to choose to study at a business school, especially if you’re given the opportunity to ‘earn while you learn’.

Is it better to study business at a business school?

An intuitive question rightly asked by many prospective students looking to study business is whether or not it is actually necessary to study at a business school and if this is even better than studying business at a usual institution.

There’s no wrong or right fixed answer to this however, where you end up studying will depend entirely on the profession you’re looking to go into/improve with.

Not only that, but it’ll be worth taking into account the actual skills you want to learn and how you want to learn them.

Some institutions offer more up to date softwares and technologies to work with for example, along with more real-life workplace situational environments or opportunities to do a placement within them. But, if you don’t get the opportunity to take part in a placement, you will still get the opportunity to apply the skills once you go to the workplace and practice using the software.

It’s a good idea to just go over the modules of the course you’re interested in and checking out reviews, forums, and hashtags on social media to see what existing students and the public are saying about how the institution teaches and coming to your own informed opinion about whether or not it’s the right place for you to study at.
