Happy 2009!
I hope that you’ve had a good 2008, and will have an even better 2009. One of the things we’ll be doing this year (I hope!) is hunting for some different computer room furniture. Our current furniture is a real mishmash. We’ve just ignored it for years, but now I’d like to finally get it looking nicer. After all, it’s the room we spend the most time in, so it seems silly to have it be the room I dislike.
I use an extremely scratched up old captain’s desk, with a banker’s chair that my grandpa used to use when he figured taxes all the time. My husband has a “temporary” particle board desk from some office supply store. (One that’s been temporary for like 8 years now.) We also have the dog’s crate in here, and a mismatched file cabinet. Just about anything would be an improvement, but we are having trouble finding something that we both like. Ideally something that will go with my existing desk & chair, which I would be willing to get refinished.
Do you have a desk that you love? What does it look like and where did you get it? I’d love some links. Speaking of links, here are a few from the past week:

Clever Dude asks, what is frugality?
I’m in the same boat as you. I hate our computer desk, and what’s worse is that it’s right in our main living area. But it’s functional and desks are so expensive. It will have to do for now.
I’m even worse – my workspace is two folding tables, a 2-drawer file cab from a yard sale and three plastic drawers! Talk about temporary! AND it’s in my livingroom… but I kinda like it that way. The kids hang out and we all watch TV together while I do the boring chores (I save stuff I need to concentrate on for when they’re at school or I boot them to the other rooms). DH’s computer is right next to mine on one of those particle board tables and he’s using a folding tv tray for a return!
That said, I plan to scour the second hand stores around here and spend some of our recent earnings on new desks. We do have plans to move our ‘office’ into another space, leaving the big room to the kids and video games and all that. I’m hoping with the economy being the way it is, there will be some nice used office furniture going cheap!
Thanks for the mention! I enjoyed reading some new personal finance site I hadn’t discovered.
Our office is mismatched, like yours. We gotten one desk for $50 and since my desk was ruined during the move, I now have a fold-out table for my desk. I hope to find some furniture myself.
