How to Deal with Workaholism

Workaholic

Japan is a very peaceful nation. But most Japanese people are workaholics, and this condition is so much more than a simple passion to work. Workaholism is an obsessive compulsive disorder to keep working, and it is an addiction that can destroy lives. The corporate world is a harsh place, and people are always very busy, sparing little time on basic, non-work activities. But if you feel you have no time for yourself and you can only think about working, you might be falling into the pit-hole of workaholism. Here are some tips that will help you improve your professional and personal life:

  • When you are on a holiday or a break, you need not do any task related to work. No conference calls on a Sunday or no presentations during a family vacation. Think about how you can you use this time to do something that might be more important for your well-being. Spend time with friends and family, instead of responding to calls or emails.
  • Don’t spend too much time on menial tasks or tasks that may not contribute to the overall return on your investment. You don’t have to finish a particular task today if no one is sitting on your shoulder and waiting for you with a deadline. There was a time for extreme hard work, but the digital world requires you to be more savvy than laborious.
  • You need to cut down the number of hours you spend on your work each day. Limit yourself to 10-12 hours and no more than that. Don’t take in unnecessary work when you have so many others tasks at hand. Stay in the office only during the office hours and not after.
  • If you feel you are having trouble dealing with the whole situation on your own, get help. There are therapists and psychiatrists who can help you with your problems. You need to realize that your health is more important than your work. If you are not comfortable talking to a therapist, you may want to simply talk to someone who has been through the same problem, your father, your colleague or even your boss. You’ll be surprised how many people are actually suffering from this problem and how common this has become in the millennial age.

Remember, workaholism isn’t the new cool. It is something that is eating away at your soul and leaving you lifeless. Deal with it today.
