Link hopping: Sell all the funds edition
I’ve been in the process of transferring money I had in an old IRA to a new brokerage house. (Since I’d become very unhappy with the financial planner who was handling it.) As part of the process I needed to liquidate my old account. The fund it was in had been consistently doing worse than the rest of the market, and wasn’t available at the new brokerage house anyway. I initiated the transfer quite a while ago, but wouldn’t you know it, THE day that the sale happened to go through was the day that fund dropped to it’s lowest point in a low time. Not two days later it was back up 80-some cents. Very frustrating, but at least I’m done with the fund. Coincidentally, my 401(k) plan switched to new management, and they didn’t carry over any of the old funds. So I guess this is my opportunity to reallocate, and hopefully turn it into a big improvement. I’ll be working on that over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, here are some recent posts that I enjoyed:
MoneyNing dodged the housing bullet back in 2007, but he’s still getting ads for 100% home financing.
Clever Dude realizes that he’s bought into the auto illusion. (He’s got three vehicles, two people, rides the metro, and is trying to decide whether or not to sell one of the vehicles.)
Awake at the Wheel talks about the power of no exit, saying that “we sometimes allow ourselves the luxury of bailing on a quest that, endured just a bit longer, or pursued more zealously would have yielded life-altering triumph.”
Canadian Capitalist asks why invest your own money? — and offers a good reason for doing so.
