On opportunity

“You create your opportunities by asking for them.”
– Shakti Gawain

Isn’t that quote true? Opportunity rarely just falls into our laps.

(Sometimes it does, but usually you have to be looking to recognize it, because sometimes it comes in disguise.)

But the fastest way to create an opportunity it to just plain old ask for it.

This is especially true with things that can save us money or earn us more money.

Take looking for a job, for example.

While it’s true that you might get a call out of the blue asking you to come work somewhere (it happened to me once) MOST of the time getting a job involves applying places, networking, constantly reminding the people you know that you are looking for work, and regularly submitting resumes.

The when you do get an interview, you need to actually ask for the job (especially if you are in sales).

Once you get the job, you’ll likely get more money if you actually ask for it. Even in these down times, I know someone who got a 25% increase in starting pay just by asking for it and making their case.

It takes guts, and knowing what you want and are worth.

You may not always get what you ask for, but you certainly won’t get it if you don’t ask at all.

Make your own opportunities.

  • I totally agree. This is true in all areas of life. I have all the jobs I have gotten just by asking. One example I was working in a bank and I really liked a customer and one day I asked if he had any openings and he made one for me. I say the worst they can do is say no and you wont’ know if you don’t ask. Be bold. A friend of ours has a house in Florida and I wanted to stay there a few nights and I called and was pleasantly surprised when she anytime and we had a wonderful stay.
